In this course, you’ll explore accounting concepts and practices, enabling effective collaboration with finance departments. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of critical financial concepts and procedures—like financial statements, statement analysis, financial strategy, budgeting, and cost behaviour. You’ll learn how to align business, financial, and HR strategies. By the course end, you’ll confidently navigate the accounting and financial aspects of HR decision-making.

Program Information

What you’ll learn studying HR Finance and Accounting:

  • Describe the nature of financial accounting, management accounting and finance, and how they relate to the rest of the organization including human resources.
  • Explain the conceptual foundations of financial accounting, management accounting and finance, and be familiar with the principal reports they produce (particularly those likely to be used by Human Resource Managers).
  • Execute detailed calculations and interpretations (with particular emphasis on applications in the Human Resources area) of the income statements, the balance sheet and the statement of cash flows, financial ratios, contribution margin and break-even analysis, the preparation of operating budgets, net present value, payback and return on assets for investment proposals.
  • Differentiate between capital and operating budgets.
  • Prepare operating budgets including the application of activity-based costing and allocation of service department costs.
  • Assess responsibility centers in a decentralized organization by utilizing performance measurement tools.
  • Develop appropriate measures of corporate performance for use in the balanced scorecard.

HR Finance and Accounting for:

All necessary materials are included in course fees.

Prerequisites

  • General computer and technology use abilities.

Technology Requirements

For in-person and online studies:
  • Laptop: Minimum Windows 10 or equivalent operating system. Recommended 8GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
Online studies only:
  • Access to reliable high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
  • Laptop must include integrated webcam and microphone.

To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.

Intake Details

A fully asynchronous online course does not require real-time communications. Asynchronous online courses do not have the required on-campus components, including assessments. The course will have a set start and finish date and set due dates for assignments and assessments.
